Diabetes Part 2 – Stop the sugar madness.

Let me explain in simple terms what Type 2 Diabetes is, and how to prevent it and reverse it.

Diabetes is a metabolic illness, meaning that it is caused by your own body and not a disease-agent.  In normal people, blood sugar is controlled by a hormone called insulin.  In diabetic people, insulin no longer does its job because the body develops resistance to it.  This causes blood sugar levels to remain at high levels.

Here is the crux of the issue.  90% of the health problems among non-smokers in the developed world are directly as a result of too much dietary sugar (and its siblings, namely rice, pasta, wheat and potatoes).

I want every human being on the planet to read this game-changing article by a heart surgeon on the dangers of sugar.

The other day someone asked me, “My mother-in-law has diabetes.  But she is rail-thin, even underweight.  How is this possible?”

Let me explain how this is possible.

Eating excess sugar and fast carbs leads to

1.  Excess body fat.

2.  Diabetes

3.  Heart Disease

4.  High Blood Pressure

5. Stroke

If you have a sugary diet, you can get any one, or all five, of these illnesses.  They are mutually exclusive.  It is true that most people with Diabetes are also overweight or have excess body fat, but the true culprit is the ongoing sugar intake, not the body fat itself.  So it is entirely likely that underweight people who live on a sugar and fast carbs diet can also develop Diabetes.

It is also true that if in the vast majority of cases if you eliminate sugar you will drop body fat, but that doesn’t happen with everyone either.   But you will always reverse Diabetes, and lower your heart disease risk and stroke risk just from eliminating sugar (even if you don’t drop body fat).

We will explore the reasons why a small minority of people don’t drop body fat by eliminating sugar, in another post…mainly it has to do with a gland called the Thyroid.

 Bonus Ravionhealth theory on addiction:

Have you ever wondered why smokers are often skinnier than non-smokers?  It is because they are addicted to nicotine. Nicotine and sugar are both highly addictive substances, but being addicted to one provides a kind-of immunity from being addicted to the other at the same time.  This is also the reason why people gain weight when they stop smoking; many simply replace the nicotine addiction unwittingly with a sugar addiction.

Stop childhood obesity with this bag of tricks…

Recently I have seen lots of kids who are around ten to twelve years old who are overweight.  These are urban kids with working professional parents!  Can anyone tell me why there should be overweight kids in today’s world, that too in well-to-do families?  What must be going through their parents’ minds when they allow their children a nonstop supply of sugary drinks, sweets, rice, pasta, bread and wheat products?

Here is a widely cited study on childhood obesity http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/10340798/reload=0;jsessionid=IwtIwSQtmksTHqV41HAv.0

I quote from the abstract…

“(Childhood obesity)short-term risks, for orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary, gasteroenterological, and endocrine conditions, although largely limited to severely overweight children, are becoming more common as the prevalence of severe overweight rises. The social burden of pediatric obesity, especially during middle childhood and adolescence, may have lasting effects on self-esteem, body image and economic mobility. The second section examines the intermediate consequences, such as the development of cardiovascular risk factors and persistence of obesity into adulthood. These mid-range effects of early obesity presage later adult disease and premature mortality. In the final section, the small body of research on the long-term morbidity and mortality associated with childhood obesity is reviewed. These studies suggest that risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality is elevated among those who were overweight during childhood. The high prevalence and dramatic secular trend toward increasing childhood obesity suggest that without aggressive approaches to prevention and treatment, the attendant health and social consequences will be both substantial and long-lasting.”

Here is my question to the parents of overweight children.

When you, as a parent, look at your obese child, do you even have a clue that the above litany of symptoms is the lifelong gift you are giving to your precious child?

Ok, that’s enough lecturing!  Now for a plan of action!

If you have an overweight child, here is what you do.  Throw out any sugary drinks you have in the home.  No more fast carbs at home, that means no pasta, no rice, no wheat, no flour, no bread and no sugar.  Here is a secret.  Chances are that your child is finding loose change at home and buying big cans of sugary pop from vending machines.  Get rid of all the loose change at home!

Of course there will be howls of protest for weeks.  Dealing with a sugar-starved child is no joke.  Sugar induces similar cravings and withdrawal symptoms as heroin!  Check out this article for more info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_addiction

Here is another secret.  If your child is overweight, chances are that he or she is not getting enough sleep.  Start with a strict discipline on sleep times!  That means cutting down TV time.

What should your child eat instead?  Fish and vegetables, meat and eggs.  Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, peas, peppers, beans.  For most of us, a stir fry wok is our best friend.  For those of you who really want to spend time on getting the most efficiency and health out of cooking, there is a whole new world out there…it is called sous-vide cooking, and I will write a blog post about it soon.

Eleven reasons why your child is overweight.

  1.  Your child is not getting enough sleep.  Lack of sleep is linked to increased chance of obesity.  Fix this problem with strict discipline around sleep times.
  2. Your child has a television in his bedroom.  Seriously?  You allow this?
  3. Your idea of dinner at home is pasta, coca cola, French fries and vanilla ice cream.
  4. Your child’s five best friends are all fat.  See below Jim Rohn’s famous quote “We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with” http://www.businessinsider.com/jim-rohn-youre-the-average-of-the-five-people-you-spend-the-most-time-with-2012-7
  5. You have coins/loose change lying around the house.  Yes, your child is feeding her vending machine sugary drink habit with all that spare change.
  6. Your child is severely stressed.  Look for signs your child is being bullied or is otherwise unable to cope with pressure.
  7. Your child has a medical condition.  Pay the pediatrician a visit.
  8. Your child is about to have a growth spurt.  If the doctor says this is the case, then you have nothing to worry.
  9. You think that a fast-food joint is a good alternative to cooking at home.
  10. Your child is not getting any exercise.  If they are not into sports, get them into a running club at least, and use incentives to get them to work out.
  11. You are giving your child too many courses of antibiotics.  The latest research shows a strong link between antibiotic use and obesity.
